A retired police officer and football coach jailed for sexually abusing three boys has died.
The Scottish Prison Service confirmed last night that Ian Jolly had died at HMP Edinburgh.
The 72-year-old, from Aberdeenshire, last year admitted carrying out a string of “depraved” offences against three boys from the late 1980s to the late 1990s.
Jolly was jailed for 27 months.
During the hearing in January 2018, Jolly’s solicitor told the court he abused the boys because the environment in the police made it impossible for him to come out as gay.
Defence counsel David Moggah said that his client turned to drink to cope, which led him to make decisions that were “clearly wrong”.
A statement on the SPS website said: “Ian Alexander Jolly 72, a prisoner at HMP Edinburgh has died.
“Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the procurator fiscal.
“A fatal accident inquiry will be held in due course.”
