Contractors have started repairing an Aberdeen street after council bosses notoriously tarred over historic granite setts last year.
There was outrage in Old Aberdeen when the ancient cassies of Old Aberdeen’s High Street were smeared over with tar last May.
Now, the local authority has confirmed a contract has been agreed to reinstate the granite setts within the marked conservation area.
Work began yesterday and should be completed by September 8.
Council officials previously estimated repairing the 230ft by 22ft stretch would cost more than £100,000.
An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: “Monday, July 15 is the start date for the permanent repairs to the setts on High Street.
“However, the public should be aware that, although the completion date is set as September 8, this includes a period of four weeks where the setts must be cured before traffic runs over it.”
Tillydrone, Seaton and Old Aberdeen councillor Alex McLellan said: “I’m pleased that the work has started at the High Street to rectify the unsightly tarring of the historic cobbles and I am sure this will be welcomed by the local community.”
