The members of an Aberdeenshire rugby club are trying to get the dream of their very own clubhouse over the line.
Deeside Rugby Club has asked the council for permission to construct a new timber home at its pitches in Banchory.
Ian Finlayson, the president of the club, said the lack of a brick-and-mortar base of operations has proven to be a big problem for its younger members in particular.
The plans would provide proper changing facilities, however, and the clubhouse would also be available for use by members of the community in Banchory and beyond.
It would take place by the club’s pitches close to The Barn Arts Centre, just north of the town’s Tesco supermarket.
Mr Finlayson said: “We have changing rooms which are old site cabins that came from Bancon some time ago.
“But we really don’t have our own social space, which is particularly an issue for our juniors.
“After games, if it’s fine weather we can spend some time together outside, but if it’s pouring with rain, social occasions usually end in disaster.
“It’s fine for our older members as they can head to the pub, but after games we really don’t have many options for younger players.
“Last winter we got a marquee, but a proper clubhouse has been on our wish list for quite some time now.”
Mr Finlayson added: “Our plan is for a single-storey, timber frame construction that will serve as a multi-use space.
“It’ll have toilets and kitchen space and we’ll be able to use it for entertainment, training with videos and as a social centre for the club.
“But this won’t just be for us. We really want it to be a community resource that benefits everyone.”
The club president added: “We’ve got a bit of fundraising to do and there are a lot of options we’re considering right now.
“With the planning process and construction, and any other delays, it will probably be many months until it’s open and ready.
Aberdeenshire West MSP Alexander Burnett, added: “As a former player, committee member and long-time supporter, I am delighted to see this plan coming forward.
“This new clubhouse is much-needed and will be a big step forward.”
