A city business has stepped in to support a charity challenge which raises funds for heart disease and stroke sufferers, in honour of an employee who benefited from its help.
Greenwell Equipment in Aberdeen is sponsoring the Beach Ballistic obstacle challenge to raise funds for Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland.
The family-run business is getting involved in the event, which takes place over August 3 and 4 at Balmedie beach, in support of their colleague Davie Hay – who suffered a stroke in July 2017.
The stroke badly affected the 52-year-old’s communication and his right side, and left him unable to walk and talk.
Having spent several months in hospital and in a rehabilitation centre, Mr Hay was able to return home in April last year with help from the charity’s rehabilitation support service – as well as care from a dedicated stroke nurse.
The Banchory man said: “It came completely out of the blue. I was a fit and healthy guy and only 50 years old. It was a total shock.
“It completely turned my life upside down.
“I had to re-learn how to walk and talk, and I still really struggle with my speech.”
Mr Hay added: “I have been overwhelmed by the support from my colleagues and friends at Greenwell.
“By sponsoring this event they’re helping stroke survivors, like me, to get their lives back on track.”
