A group of north-east residents on a quest to rejuvenate unloved sporting sites have celebrated the progress of their first project by unveiling plans to transform a second abandoned spot.

The Peterhead Area Community Trust, known as Pact, last year started out on a mission to reinvigorate various dilapidated sports facilities across the town.

They have already made significant strides in restoring the pavilion at Barclay Park, and yesterday marked that success by staging a football gala for youngsters there.

And Pact has now unveiled plans for its next undertaking – which will be to breathe new life into the abandoned tennis courts and bowling green on Victoria Road.

Chairwoman, Dianne Beagrie, outlined the scheme to interested residents and asked for their feedback on how to proceed with it.

She said: “The public always say there aren’t certain things here so this is their chance to say what they want us to do with Victoria Road, and we will soon have details online too.”

The Victoria Road scheme was revealed as 16 teams took part in games at Barclay Park for Pact’s first event.

The main changes planned at the pavilion are the creation of a community space with a small kitchen and upgraded changing rooms suitable for sports teams to use.

But the toughest task will be making the building wheelchair-accessible, meaning all community groups and sports outfits will be able to use it.

The contractor, Ken Barbour Builders, plans to complete the work over the next few months, with the Pact group hoping it will be finished in October.

Vice-chairman, Graeme Mackie, said: “We are refurbishing it to bring it back up to standard as a useful community space and changing rooms.

“It will be disabled-friendly and all groups in Peterhead will be able to use it as we’re setting up an online booking system.

“As soon as we get the lease of the pitches at Barclay Park we will add that to the system, so groups can easily use the site.”

Mr Mackie explained that three options are being prepared for the Victoria Road project, and encouraged people to get in touch with their views.
