A scheme to offer free Friday night basketball sessions to young people will soon be arriving in Fraserburgh.
People aged between 11 and 21 will gain the opportunity to play the sport at Fraserburgh Community Centre every Friday from 8pm to 10pm thanks to the Shell Twilight Basketball initiative.
It is designed to help tackle antisocial behaviour by engaging youngsters in sports.
Trial sessions have been offered over the summer holidays and the full programme will be launched at the start of the new school term.
The sessions are being run with Scottish Sports Futures.
Manager Sean Brady said: “Our aim is to embed sessions in communities and ensure there is a legacy of local staff and young people to deliver the programme beyond our initial investment.”
They are supported by title sponsors Shell and the Scottish Government’s CashBack for Communities scheme, which takes funds recovered from the proceeds of crime and invests them into free activities and programmes for young people.
Shell UK’s communications advisor John Raine said: “Shell Twilight Basketball is an exciting initiative that is making a real contribution to social inclusion by giving young people the opportunity to make a number of positive choices for their futures while having fun and learning vital skills.”
David Cook, chairman of the Live Life Aberdeenshire culture and sport sub-committee, added: “Basketball is a very inclusive sport and one which is already very popular in Aberdeenshire, so we hope to introduce a new audience to the sport who will really benefit from the inclusive, supportive and most of all fun environment it offers.”
Sessions are run by experiences staff and will also include opportunities to meet sports stars from the professional Glasgow Rocks team and attend games.
