Coastguard bosses have issued a water safety reminded after two kayakers were seen in distress in an Aberdeenshire bay.

Emergency calls were issued this afternoon after the pair were spotted struggling within Sandend Bay, near Portsoy.

Coastguard Rescue Teams from Portsoy and Buckie, along with a local senior officer and the RNLI Macduff Lifeboat were immediately sent and, as the teams arrived, they had managed to get to some rocks.

A coastguard spokesman said: “The two people today were lucky and escaped serious injury. However, we urge anyone going kayaking or enjoying sports by the sea to remember the following:

“Be aware of the weather conditions and water temperature. Even in the middle of summer, our water temperature is not usually warmer than 15 degrees.

“Be aware of offshore winds that can make it difficult to return to shore.

“Make sure someone on shore knows your paddling plan: where you are going, how long you plan to be and how to get in touch.

“Most importantly, always make sure you are wearing buoyancy like a personal flotation device. Always wear it when you are out paddling.

“If you see anyone that looks in difficulties at sea or by the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
