A north-east science centre is looking for a new chief executive to prepare the facility for lift-off in the future.

Aberdeen Science Centre is due to open at the Tramsheds on Constitution Street next summer. The £6million building will replace the existing centre, which has moved to temporary accommodation on George Street to allow visitors to enjoy interactive exhibits and topical science events while the refurbishment work is carried out.

The venue opened under the name Satrosphere in 1988, and has engaged thousands of children in science and instructed them in how the world around them works.

The transformation will include an extension and creation of a new mezzanine floor – which will almost double the exhibition space – and expose the roof structure to allow natural light to flood into the building.

It will also include major investment in new, cutting-edge interactive displays and exhibition content.

Frank Fowlie, trustee of the science centre, said it was an exciting time to join the organisation as it prepares to reopen in summer 2020.

He added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for a new chief executive to lead the centre ahead of its opening in 2020, and shape it into a major attraction and education facility which people and businesses of the north-east can be proud of.”

The redevelopment has been made possible by support and funding from the Inspiring Science Fund – a partnership between the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), UK Research and Innovation, and Wellcome.

Additional support has been granted by Opportunity North East (ONE) and Aberdeen City Council.
