A frightened fox was saved from the waters of Aberdeen Harbour yesterday – before the little creature escaped from its rescuers.
The animal had been spotted splashing around in the sea close to one of the docks on Monday, and was seen again early yesterday morning struggling to get back to dry land.
However, thanks to the efforts of a group of concerned animal lovers who were working at the harbour, a rope was successfully deployed around its torso, and the animal was brought up and out of the water soon after 8am.
Although the shivering fox was left exhausted after its ordeal, it still managed to evade capture and ran away before it could be contained.
Scottish SPCA animal rescue officer Michelle Graham said: “We were made aware of a fox in the water at Aberdeen Harbour, near Commercial West Dock.
“We are unsure how the wild animal found his way into the water.
“The job was quickly cancelled as we got word the fox had managed to get out of the water and had disappeared. No doubt, he was delighted to be back on dry land.

Ricky Greenhowe, of Aberdeen Harbour Tours, was one of those working at the site, who watched the dramatic rescue.
He said: “It had been stuck in the water since Monday, swimming around and clinging on for dear life on one of the ladders.
“There must have been about 10 folk helping out, they finally managed to get some rope around its body and lift it onto the quayside.
“I am really happy the wee fox managed to get away, they are a lot smarter than people think and it looks like he was feeling better once he got out of the water.
“The poor thing was really shaking with the cold and it really goes to show you how hardy these animals are to survive something like that.”
