Milltimber teen launches dog-friendly fundraiser

A 15-year-old has been inundated with requests from pet owners after launching a dog-friendly fundraiser.

Jessica Carns will be part of a group of students at the Albyn School who will travel to Bolivia in June 2020 to help underprivileged communities.

Each student has been asked to fundraise individually for the trip and Jess decided to combine two of her favourite things – dogs and baking – to do her bit.

Jessica bakes all the items herself

The response has been astonishing, with her K9 Bakery catching the attention of dog owners far and wide.

In the kitchen at her home in Miltimber she conjures up an array of tasty canine treats which she has dubbed ‘pupcakes’.

They include carrot and honey cakes, chicken chews, peanut butter biscuits and full-sized cakes for “birthdays or puppy showers,” while diabetic dog biscuits are also available.

Jess offers her creations through a fundraising Facebook page she set-up for the Bolivia challenge.

She said: “All the profits go to my trip to Bolivia where I’m helping a community to build a greenhouse so the people there can have more harvests each year.

“We’re also getting time to visit some local people’s homes and do some mountain climbing. I’m really excited.

“I’d tried fundraising through things like car boot sales but then tried out the dog bakery for something a bit different.

“It has been really fun – and there’s been a good reaction since I shared the business online. I’ve had more than 100 orders.

“The pupcakes are really healthy and the peanut butter has reduced salt and fat.

“Everything has natural ingredients.”

Jess and her family recently lost their Daschund, Maya, but have been making the days of many other dogs across Aberdeen as a result of the K9 Bakery.

Mum Jan has been enlisted as delivery driver for the business venture.

She said: “There have been a lot of returning customers. It’s been a great idea and something a bit different, definitely.

“There’s been a lot of effort involved on Jess’ part.

“She has been working really hard to do this and I am really proud of her.”
