Detectives in Aberdeen are appealing for information after a man wearing a balaclava threatened shop staff with a weapon during an attempted robbery.

The incident happened at a Spar shop on Provost Watt Drive and was reported to police at around 10pm on Thursday.

A man wearing a balaclava made his way into the shop, showing a weapon to two members of staff.

The employees weren’t injured during the attempt but police said they had been left shaken by the events.

Detective Inspector Sam Buchan, of Ellon CID, said: “We are following a number of positive lines of inquiry and are keen to hear from anyone who was in the Provost Watt Drive area around the time of the incident.

“The man responsible is believed to be in his early 20s and from the local area.

“Anyone with information should contact us on 101, quoting incident number 4229 of 19 September, or you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The incident has sparked security concerns among other shops in the area. The betting shop next door, Coral, had to phone their security company to make sure it was adequately protected.

The outlet has upgraded its security system so that the doors can be locked remotely from the inside.

Staff at the Spar declined to talk about the crime last night, and the retailer’s head office did not respond to a request for comment.
