A major expansion of an Aberdeenshire sports facility will start next year, after planning permission was granted yesterday.
The Garioch Sports and Community Centre in Inverurie has been given the go-ahead to build a new facility with three indoor tennis courts, a new reception area, gym and fitness studios, as well as a standalone early learning and childcare centre.
The project will bring the first three-court indoor tennis facility to Aberdeenshire and has been backed by Judy Murray.
Kevin Bonarius, chief operating officer of the facility, said: “We’re absolutely delighted, we’ve been working a long time on this from behind the scenes, so now we’ll be able to push on through and get the capital funding in place that we need to deliver the project.
“We’ll be looking to start construction in 2020, and it will probably be a minimum of 12 to 18 months of construction.
“This will make a huge difference. There’s no real tennis in Inverurie at this time, and there hasn’t been for 20 years.
“We’ll be looking to be the only indoor tennis facility in Aberdeenshire, so we’re excited to move forward.”
Mr Bonarius also thanked the Inverurie Community Council for its support in backing the overhaul.
