Aberdonians have been praised by blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan after ranking second in Scotland for having the most stem cell donors on the register.
At a parliament event hosted by the Anthony Nolan Trust and the fire service, Aberdeen Central MSP Kevin Stewart collected a certificate congratulating his constituency on its uptake.
More than 760,000 people in the UK are on the Anthony Nolan register, with 2,551 donors from the area.
Mr Stewart said: “I am very proud that my constituency is home to a record level of stem cell donors, any one of whom could offer the only chance of giving someone with blood cancer a second chance at life.
“Donating stem cells could make an enormous difference to someone with no other chance of a cure.”
Henny Braund, chief executive of Anthony Nolan, said: “In the last year 2,551 selfless people from Aberdeen Central joined the register, each one representing hope for patients with blood cancer.”
