Neon-clad fundraisers brighten up dark night in Peterhead

More than 200 people added some vibrant colour to the darkened streets of Peterhead last night as they donned neon gear for a challenge in aid of a north-east charity.

People of all ages walked or ran around the town to raise more than £2,000 for the Buchan Giving Tree, which helps families in need.

Leaving from the Symposium, Lido South Beach, at 7pm, fundraisers braced the cold to traverse 5km or 10km.

Though in excess of 200 people registered prior to the big night, last minute additions were also welcomed.

The idea for the fundraiser came about when a team of eight friends from Peterhead thought about how they could raise money for a local charity.

Shona Watson, from Buchan Giving Tree, said: “This is the first neon walk we’ve done and our hope for the evening was to raise as much as we could and to raise the profile of the work that we do.

“Buchan Giving Tree supports families all year round as well as Christmas time, and fundraising events like this allow us to help more people.”

On completion of their jaunt, participants returned to the Symposium where they received a hot or cold drink as well as a fancy piece.
