Teenagers battling cancer will soon benefit from a dedicated support space.
Cancer and Leukaemia in Children Orientated (Calico) provides vital support to children living with cancer in the Grampian region.
Yesterday it was announced that Union Square shopping centre had donated £5,000 which means the charity can begin work on its Teen Pit project.
Within the dedicated young person’s unit at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (RACH), the space will offer children a place to relax away from their ward.
It will include Wi-Fi access and a music and gaming spot, as well as a television and DVD player.
The Teen Pit will also be used as a quiet and informal space for young patients to meet with the clinical staff.
Calico was set up in 1983 to help families of children living with cancer, leukaemia or cancer-related illnesses.
Every year, the charity fundraises to provide essential equipment for the oncology ward at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, as well as toys, games and craft supplies for the outpatient’s department.
Ryan Manson, General Manager at Union Square, said: “We are delighted to be able to support Calico with the Teen Pit initiative and help the charity continue to support young people and their families through extremely difficult times.”
Milene Munro, on behalf of the Calico committee, added: “Thank you so much to Hammerson’s Union Square for this funding, which will allow us to further develop the Teen Pit at RACH.
“We are also pleased to be able to work over the coming months with the shopping centre to try and raise awareness of the work we do, as well as for all childhood cancers.”
