Councillors are being urged to back plans for the creation of a new cemetery and car park on the outskirts of Turriff.
Aberdeenshire Council is being urged to grant planning permission as the town’s existing site is rapidly approaching capacity and there is no scope to extend it.
Planners have backed the application, which would provide 1,504 casket lairs and 2,734 lairs in total.
In his report to councillors, director of infrastructure services, Stephen Archer, notes: “It has been suitably demonstrated by the applicant that there is a pressing need for a new cemetery in Turriff.
“The proposed development will deliver an essential public facility, which is relatively well connected to the existing settlement.”
The application site was chosen as the ground levels are suited for a cemetery and it is an accessible location for public transport.
It was one of four that investigated for a new cemetery, with the other sites discounted for reasons of size, location and infrastructure.
The new cemetery would be serviced by a car park providing 60 parking spaces as well as 4 disabled spaces.
Members of the Formartine Area Committee will be asked to back the application at a meeting on Tuesday, October 29.
