More than 1,000 hardy runners and walkers donned head torches and took to the trails around a Deeside estate on Saturday.
Glen Tanar, near Aboyne, was lit up as the stars of the Illuminator race completed either an 8K, 15K or 15-mile route.
Winning the 15 mile route was Robbie Simpson, from Deeside, who completed the course in one hour, 34 minutes and 16 seconds.
The fastest female was Virginie Barrand who completed the route in one hour, 55 minutes and 56 seconds.
Organisers Firetrails announced earlier this year that the Illuminator will take a new format next year to keep it interesting for participants.
It raises money for Braemar Mountain Rescue team, of which volunteers help police the course.
Race director Richard Lawes said: “It’s great to work in partnership with the mountain rescue team, we’re are looking forward to developing next year’s new format for the event with them and with the feedback our fantastic participants have given us.”
As a result of the Illuminator races, the mountain rescue team have been able to train and equip several new members of staff.
The event itself also serves as a night-time exercise for the team, who are a vital part of the safety provision at the Illuminator and support to countless participants over the years.
Malcolm MacIntyre’s, operations director of the BMRT, said: “It was great to see so many people taking part and having some fun in Glen Tanar; the weather held and the huge efforts of Firetrail made for a great event; the best one yet.”
