An Aberdeen man has appeared in court after the bomb squad was called to a street in the city at the weekend.
Police were forced to cordon off a section of King Street on Saturday evening while ordnance specialists attended to an incident near the Tesco petrol station.
The force later confirmed a 26-year-old man had been arrested – but said that there had been no immediate risk to the wider public.
This afternoon Richard Hume Smith appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court charged with making or knowingly possessing an explosive substance, and assaulting or impeding police.
He made no plea and was remanded in custody.
Smith, whose address was given as Aberdeen, is expected to appear in the dock again later this month.
A section of the road was shut and several nearby residents, along with customers at the Tesco and Bobbin pub, were evacuated as a precaution to allow the emergency services to investigate further.
The street was closed between University Road and Linksfield road until it re-opened at 5am.
