Firefighters tackle blaze at former Aberdeen army barracks

Thick plumes of smoke could be seen after a former army barracks in the city caught fire.

Firefighters were called just after 8pm last night to tackle the blaze on King Street in Aberdeen.

Four appliances were called from the central station and North Anderson Drive.

Fire crews left the scene at around 3.20am today and police said the road around the area remains closed.

The building is the site of the Roy Strathdee Building.

Police were also on the scene and had cordoned off the junction from King Street to Lord Hay’s Road and Don Street.

They could be seen diverting motorists and allowing residents access.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: “We received the call just after 8pm to a fire at an old army barracks.

“It was in the ground floor of a storage area and we had three fire appliances on the scene.

“We used two hose-reel jets and two breathing apparatus.”

The thick smoke had also drifted into the main street, obscuring vision for motorists.

No one was injured or required assistance.
