An Insch woman is encouraging people to stop buying clothes to “safeguard the environment.”
Sarah Robinson pledged not to buy any new clothes or accessories for the new 12 months on her 55th birthday, as she wants to reduce clothing landfill.
Her project- Grassetstyle 365 No New Clothes – is raising funds for Cancer Research UK and the Gordon Schools in Huntly.
She said: “In the UK, 2,000 new items of clothing are bought every minute contributing to 50 truck loads of clothes put into landfill every day.
“Not buying clothes has actually been easier than I thought it would – it is quite liberating to work with what you have.”
Mrs Robinson makes weekly visits to the Gordon School in a bid to share her eco-friendly messages and meet those her project will benefit.
In early November she spoke to all the staff and the pupils about the project in a series of assemblies.
She and the school are hoping to establish a “SwopaShop” to encourage a more sustainable approach to clothing.
She added: “My aim is to persuade people to buy less clothes, to not put their clothes in the bin and to recycle as much as possible.
“I’m hoping that people will think about what they are doing, make some long term changes and persuade others to do the same.
“Future generations face a devastating environmental legacy and we have to act now to safeguard the environment.
“There may be many things that are outwith our direct control but we all have control over how many clothes we buy and what we do with them.”
She has embarked on a British College of Professional Styling course to make sure her project is not only sustainable, but also stylish.
A fundraising disco will be held in the village of Premnay on January 18 for the project.
