Work to demolish a former Garthdee sports centre destroyed in a fire has begun.
The former Kaimhill Sports Centre closed in 2016 after being deemed surplus to requirements, and a fire in September prompted calls for the “unsafe” building to be torn down urgently.
Now demolition is under way, with plans for the future of the site still under consideration.
Paul O’Connor, chairman of Garthdee Community Council and the Inchgarth Community Centre, said: “I’m delighted to see that something is finally being done, this will hopefully open the door to a new development that will benefit the community.
“So much land has been taken it would be great if something positive came back to this area.”
It is understood that the council has earmarked the site for council housing.
Councillor Ian Yuill, leader of the city’s Lib Dem group, said: “I’m pleased to see work is underway to demolish the site but it’s disappointing that it has taken so long.
“The building was unsafe and making it so should be the first priority.
“I’d be happy to support plans to build council homes at the site, but I’m also keen that the open space is retained and it is important that children have a place to play tennis – the courts need to be either renovated or replaced.”
