A Commonwealth Games gold medallist yesterday said she was “delighted” a street is to be named in her honour.
Sharpshooter Sheena Sharp, from Huntly, represented Scotland at both the 2002 Manchester and 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games and secured one silver and two gold medals during the two events.
Last week the Press and Journal reported that Aberdeenshire Council were discussing whether to name a street after her and now members of the Marr area committee have given their blessing.
Chairwoman Moira Ingleby said: “Sheena Sharp has really helped to put Huntly on the map.
“She is held in high regard and it is very appropriate to honour her by naming the street in her name.”
The street – part of a new development near Deveron Road – was initially to be called Deveron Mews until residents were consulted.
Huntly Community Council coordinated a survey and “Sheena Sharp Drive” was the chosen name.
Last night, Ms Sharp said she had been amazed to find out she was being thought about in such a fashion.
She said: “It was a real shock when I got the message and I’m absolutely delighted.
“It’s a real honour to have a street named after me. It’s definitely not something that happens every day.
“It’s something that would be there forever, which is fantastic.
“The street’s not there yet, but it’s right around the corner from my house.”
Community council member Tony Gill said the name had been “very popular” with residents and “recognised the enormous talent of Sheena Sharp”.
Attending her first Commonwealth Games in 2002, Ms Sharp won silver in the 50m rifle prone pairs with Susan Jackson.
At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Sharp and Jackson went one better and won gold in the same event, edging out England duo Sharon Lee and Helen Spittles.
Sharp also won a second gold in the 50m rifle prone singles event.
