Britain’s largest trade union has joined its voice to the chorus of calls for a disgraced Aberdeen councillor to resign.
Torry and Ferryhill member Alan Donnelly remains an elected member despite his recent conviction for sexual assault.
He has already resigned from the Conservatives and been stripped of his committee positions- with a special emergency meeting of the council today to decide on new administration positions.
Group leaders of all parties have called for his resignation and he has been reported to the standards commission.
And last night Bryan Simpson, the industrial organiser of the hospitality section of the Unite union, said: “Sexual harassment like this is all too common within the hospitality industry.
“A 2018 survey of 600 of our members found that 91% had experienced verbal or physical sexual harassment from customers and colleagues.
“This is a particularly disturbing example made all the worse by the fact that the perpetrator was a senior local politician.
“Now that he has been found guilty, we would suggest his position is completely untenable and if the local authority has any sense or empathy for the victim he should be shown the door.
“We would strongly encourage Aberdeen City Council to adopt and implement our charter in order to ensure this does not happen to another worker.”
Mr Donnelly did not respond to a request for comment.
