A member of the Scotland under-18 water polo team is giving up his Christmas morning to spend it with care home residents.
Stevan Spanovic has been volunteering at Angusfield House for the last two years – balancing that with his sports training.
And, after seeing at first hand how loneliness had crept into the lives of some of the residents in the home, the 16-year-old asked friends, family and neighbours for donations, so that he could give every person a festive gift.
As school wound down for the holidays, Stevan, who is studying for his Highers, spent his spare time wrapping the presents and writing a card for every member of the home.
He said: “I decided to do this after volunteering at Angusfield House for the past two years.
“I realised that, for the residents, there comes a time in their lives when they do start to get quite lonely and haven’t many people to talk to.
“Recently, I asked for donations, so that every resident in the home could get a present to give them a happier Christmas this year.
“I’m going in on the morning of Christmas Day to see them.”
Having recently been part of the under-18 Scottish Saltires who won at the Swim England inter-regional water polo championships, Stevan enjoys chatting to the residents – particularly about sport.
He said: “I talk with them quite a lot when I’m there – I’ve made a special bond with them. I know a few really like football, so that is always a hot topic.
“Each present has a box of chocolates and a toiletry like shampoo, deodorant, lotion or hand cream.
“I have been overwhelmed with the kind donations from people wanting to help.
“There are so many that I m planning to give gifts to the staff who are away from their families working on Christmas day.”
