An Aberdeen shop has closed its doors for the final time- just days after Christmas.
Surprised bargain-hunters came across a sign on the door of Hawkin’s Bazaar, in the city’s Bon Accord centre, yesterday informing them the unit had closed and the nearest store was now in Dundee.
Yesterday staff could be seen through the shutters packing away goods and moving shelves.
In August, the company which owns the toy retailer put it on the market with warnings there could be shop closures.
Starting life as a mail order sales business in the 1970s, the company has grown over the years to include 23 shops across the country.
However, in recent years there have been well-publicised troubles with high street stores as shoppers increasingly turn online.
Retailers have warned that their post-Christmas sales this year may be the worst on record.
The sign on the shop in Aberdeen read: “Hawkin’s Bazaar Aberdeen has now closed.
“Your nearest store is Dundee.
“We would like to thank all our customers and wish them a happy new year.”
Shoppers responded with disappointment to the news online yesterday.
One wrote: “What a shame. I always get some of the family’s gifts in there.”
Another wrote: “That’s shocking, it’s such a shame.”
Hawkin’s Bazaar did not respond to request for comment.
