An inclusive Aberdeen rugby team plans to tackle discrimination after receiving £2,500 for new kits and equipment.

Aberdeen Taexali Rugby Club, which is the first in the area to promote itself as being inclusive for for gay, straight, bisexual and trans men received the boost from property firm Cala Homes.

The club has used the cash to buy new jerseys and branded team kits, new branded rugby balls and additional training equipment.

Club treasurer, Stephen Williamson, said: “Ever since the founding of our club, we have aimed to be a pillar of support for the LGBT community in Aberdeen, offering an all-inclusive and welcoming group of like-minded people.

“We hope to continue to do this through even more support from the community and through competitive play and tournament events which stand for tolerance in sports.”

The club is the first team to represent the north-east of Scotland as part of the International Gay Rugby (IGR) community and has pioneered a tolerant and accepting way for anyone to become involved in the sport without discrimination.

Mike Naysmith, managing director at Cala Homes North, said: “The work carried out by the team at Aberdeen Taexali Rugby Club is simply remarkable, not only for the LGBT community in the region, but for the sport in general.”
