Transport chiefs and council officers have commissioned a study into the possibility of creating a cycling and walking route between Westhill and Kingswells.
Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire councils have teamed with transport group Nestrans for the project, which will explore options for the proposed “active travel” route along a stretch of the A944 Aberdeen to Alford road.
In 2017 councillors agreed plans to encourage walking and cycling in the area.
The scheme included a full review into the A944 Aberdeen to Westhill corridor as there were “issues with sections of the route” and “limited provision for people cycling onwards to the city centre.”
Many cyclists and walkers already use the stretch to travel, but believe a designated path would encourage more users.
Last night, West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MP Andrew Bowie encouraged people to share their ideas to help shape the route’s future.
He said: “I’ve been raising the lack of safe, dedicated active travel spaces around Westhill with the authorities for some time.
“This would be a practical way to drive down the number of cars on the road, and promote a healthy lifestyle.
“The interaction of any route with the AWPR at Kingswells is obviously going a main issue.
“Nestrans and the consultants are at an early stage so any ideas will be most welcome.”
A date for the start of public consultation has yet to be identified, but local consultees are now being contacted.
