A special new trophy, sculpted using old coins from across the world, has been created in the build-up to the new salmon fishing season on the River Dee.
The fish-shaped award for best catch will be presented at the opening of the River Dee’s 2020 season on February 1.
Commissioned by David Littlewood, owner of the Tor Na Coille hotel in Banchory, the unique trophy has been crafted by Aberdeenshire artists Helen Denerley and Kenny McKay.
The artwork incorporates pennies and coins from throughout the world, designed to act as fish scales, representing the global appeal of the famous angling opportunities on the Aberdeenshire river.
Mr Littlewood said: “The River Dee is widely known as one of the great salmon rivers of the world.
“Anyone who has ever cast a fly for Atlantic salmon will know the allure of our river, and we have the privilege of welcoming anglers from all over the globe who come in search of the ultimate prize – a Dee springer taken on the fly.
“Achieving the best catch is an incredible feat and that is why we are pleased to have commissioned this new award.
“It’s a stunning piece of art to recognise such a magnificent achievement, and the huge economic benefit which the river and salmon bring to this region.”
