If there is something on a man’s mind, there is no better place to mull it over than with a pint in the local pub.
And while there, a beer mat is often fiddled with – or at least that’s the logic behind a new initiative by the Peterhead support group Men United.
Sandy Garvock and Aaron Ritchie launched the organisation last year after realising many of the men in and around the town were suffering from poor mental health and had nowhere to speak about their problems.
They run weekly meetings at undisclosed locations so that men can speak up without stigma and seek some assurance from others.
Around 30 to 40 attend every week admitting to their struggles.
Now, the pair are wanting to spread the word and bring in many more locals who may be facing challenges and have teamed up with Peterhead club Deja Vu.
Beer mats, emblazoned with their logo and contact information, will be around the club and they’re hoping to branch out to other venues.
Mr Garvock said: “When we were brainstorming ways to reach more guys, we realised that when guys get depressed they’ll sit in a bar and stare at a beer mat.
“We’ve both seen it many times, they fiddle with them.
“Since I knew the owner of Deja Vu, I spoke to her and they’ve sponsored the mats for us. It seems like the ideal way for men to notice it and they are also very easy to pick up and pocket or pass to a mate if you think they’re struggling.”
The beer mats will make their debut in the club this week.
