A renowned international cellist has been appointed the new conductor and music director of a north-east community orchestra.
Ignasi Sole, who studied his craft in Spain and the Netherlands, will now head up the 40-strong Inverurie Orchestra.
After winning a series of acclaimed young musician awards, Mr Sole completed a master’s degree then moved to Aberdeen in 2017.
Since then he has been working with charity Sistema Scotland’s Big Noise Torry project, where he has been developing his teaching and conducting skills.
Last year he was also appointed music director of Aberdeen University Symphony Orchestra and the Marischal Chamber Orchestra.
Mr Sole is replacing Paul Tierney, who had led Inverurie Orchestra since 2007 but stepped down to focus on other musical pursuits.
The members of Inverurie Orchestra rehearse once a week, working to stage two performances every year.
Its next concert will be held at the town’s Acorn Centre on June 7, featuring pieces from Ralph Vaughn Williams, Sibelius and Beethoven.
Inverurie Orchestra chairman Ian Clarke said: “We were quite concerned when our first conductor left after 12 years and we wondered if we would find anyone else.
“But we had three excellent candidates and Ignasi got the job – and we are very delighted.”
