WEATHER UPDATE: Schools closed, homes without power as wintry conditions continue to cause chaos

Wintry weather conditions are continuing to cause chaos in the north and north-east.

Frequent and heavy snow showers are affecting the north and north-east today.

Snow showers will occur especially over high ground, giving slight accumulations of up to 1in above 490ft and 2-4in above 980ft, the Met Office has warned.

Snow will gradually build up and in a few locations, accumulations of over 8in are possible by Tuesday evening over the highest routes in Scotland.

The height of the snow level will vary throughout the period, but it is likely that any snow accumulations at low levels will only be temporary.

Strong winds, gusting 50-60 mph, will lead to blizzard conditions at times and considerable drifting of lying snow over high ground. Icy surfaces are likely to occur, more especially on Monday night into Tuesday morning. Frequent lightning strikes are also possible, perhaps leading to interruptions to power supplies.

The yellow warning is in place until 11.59pm tonight.

There are a number of schools in the Highlands that have been closed already due to the conditions while in Moray, the Tomintoul Bus F and connecting transport for Speyside High did not run this morning due to weather and road conditions.

Snow gates on the A93 at Braemar and Spittal of Glenshee have been shut and the Queensferry Crossing is likely to remain closed to motorists until Wednesday.

Highland Wildlife Park has said they will be closed today due to the weather. A statement on its Facebook page said they are monitoring the situation and will post updates as soon as possible.

Properties on the west coast have been left with no power.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks was alerted there was a fault at 9.42am. Around 1,400 properties have been affected.

On Wednesday, there is a yellow warning for snow and ice for the north.

Further snow showers are likely across western Scotland on Wednesday morning. These are likely to lead to further accumulations of snow above around 100 metres with 2-4in of snow possible above around 820ft. Any snow accumulations over lower ground are likely to be temporary. Icy surfaces will be an additional hazard along with strong winds leading to some blizzard conditions at times.

The warning also covers parts of Moray and Aberdeenshire.
