Aberdeen councillors have been recommended to rent out the city’s iconic Torry battery as a viewing site for dolphins in the North Sea.
At Monday’s full council meeting, members will be asked to approve plans to lease out the former artillery station to Greyhope Bay Ltd for a “peppercorn” rent of £1 a year for five years.
The organisation has been fundraising to build the special wildlife base and, as of this month, had raised £139,000.
The ambitious scheme was originally due to be built around the corner of Greyhope Road – closer to Girdle Ness Lighthouse – with a £10million price tag, but the decision was made to relocate to the historic battery last year after public consultation.
In an application, the group has promised to create an enclosed viewing platform with a coffee shop, decked access walkway, outside seating area and toilet facilities.
