Doric Film Festival will return in 2021 after cancellation of this year’s event

North-east filmmakers will have to wait to see the fruits of their labour appear on the big screen following the cancellation of the 2020 Doric Film Festival.

The event had been open for entries until the end of May, with an awards ceremony planned for June.

But, in the midst of the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak, organisers have decided to postpone the project until next year.

The festival will still have a virtual presence this summer, with plans in the pipeline to host an online celebration on June 30 – the day the awards were due to take place.

This will feature pre-recorded messages and highlight some of the films from last year’s inaugural occasion at the Belmont Filmhouse in Aberdeen.

Event creator Frieda Morrison said: “This has been a hard decision but our priority is the health and safety of everyone involved.

“Many film-makers will have planned to involve other people in their work and obviously that interaction isn’t possible at the moment.

“We also understand that many of the entrants will be able to work on their films independently at home, so we hope they will use the time to polish their entries for the 2021 Doric Film Festival, which we hope will be bigger and better than ever.”
