A north-east charity has been generating hundreds of pounds each week – and fundraisers have not even had to leave their sofas.
Clan Cancer Support has been hosting an online quiz every Sunday evening to keep people entertained and give their brains a workout.
The organisation supports people affected by cancer throughout the north-east and northern isles, but has lost large portions of its vital income through coronavirus-related cancellations.
It does not receive any statutory income from the government and had been due to raise significant sums through events including the Kiltwalk and Baker Hughes Aberdeen Running Festival.
Staff came up with the idea of holding a weekly quiz, asking for a small £3 donation per player.
Its regular hosts include fundraising team manager Steph McCann and her husband, Lee, who used to host regular quizzes when he was a student.
Mrs McCann said: “We were looking for a way to continue to engage with our supporters, keep people entertained at home and to help raise vital funds for people affected by cancer.
“More than 200 teams took part this weekend, with the number joining-in growing every week.
“It’s a fun thing for all the family to take part in and raises money for Clan at a very difficult time for the charity.”
She added: “Being in lockdown is challenging for everyone, but even more so for those faced with a cancer diagnosis.
“The online fundraising is helping us continue our telephone, email and online resource centre, as well as Clan Haven, our bed and breakfast facility for those attending cancer treatment at ARI.”
The Sunday Sofa Quiz can be accessed via the Clan Facebook page and at clanhouse.org.
