The Lufthansa plane, which was carrying 89 passengers, turned back to Frankfurt after encountering problems on Sunday afternoon. Passengers felt what they thought was turbulence before an announcement was made in German, and then in English, confirming engine problems. Lufthansa confirmed the Boeing 737-500 incident happened 30 minutes into the flight. A spokeswoman said an engine on the plane shut down and that pilots had to “re-start” it in mid-air. She added: “Investigations will be carried out to find out find out what caused this. “Passengers were fully informed about why the flight had to turn back.” Some passengers were put on a later flight to Aberdeen but others stayed overnight in the German city.
