People could soon be running, jogging, cycling, skipping or even dancing across the north-east to raise money for charity.

Befriend a Child – a specialist charity which pairs up adult volunteers with youngsters  – is inviting people to take part in its first digital fundraising challenge.

People can complete their 5K either individually or as a team, to help support the organisation.

Befriend a Child has also teamed up with Banchory-based personal trainer Seonaid Alsop, who will be offering coaching advice and free workout videos to inspire participants.

Hannah Adams, marketing and communications manager at Befriend a Child, said: “We were looking for a way to engage our supporters across Aberdeen,
Aberdeenshire and beyond.

“With so many outdoor fitness events and challenges having been cancelled we saw it as an opportunity to try something a bit different and raise funds for our children in the process.”

Volunteers normally accompany children on outings or enjoy fun activities like baking with them, but now some are instead sending care packages as they wait to be reunited in person.

As part of the registration fee, participants will gain access to a closed Facebook group where they can share advice and interact with Ms Aslop, and they will receive a 5K a day certificate from the charity.

Ms Aslop, of Seonaid Drummond Fitness, added: “I’ll be there to offer the participants motivational support, to encourage and help people push past their own doubts about whether or not they can achieve their challenge.”

Befriend a Child chairman Len Ironside with CEO Sarah Misra

Sarah Misra, Befriend a Child chief executive, added: “The support Befriend a
Child offers is needed now more than ever and is invaluable to the mental health
and wellbeing of our children and their families.

“We can not thank our supporters enough for their generosity in ensuring we can continue to turn frowns upside down at this time.”
