A plaque commemorating a north-east coffee shop’s national honour was unveiled by the First Minister yesterday.
Coco Works at Inverurie Railway Station won the supporters’ category at the 2013 National Railway Heritage Awards.
Jennie and George Lawson opened the venture in May last year – seven years after they first started making plans for the business.
There unable to start work sooner because the spare rooms at the station were being used by rail staff displaced by the Union Square development in Aberdeen.
When an old waiting room finally became available they began the task of bringing it up to standard.
Mr Lawson said the couple never expected to receive recognition for their venture.
“One of last year’s winners was the Forth Road Bridge so we were absolutely chuffed to win – we have to sit back and pinch ourselves sometimes,” he said.
Aberdeenshire East MSP Mr Salmond said: “It is terrific to have facilities such as these – which have become legendary among folk in the town.
“This is a prestigious national award which is great for the Inverness to Aberdeen line.”
