A raffle organised by independent businesses to support vulnerable women during the coronavirus lockdown has raised more than £5,000 in its first week.

Started by four north-east designers – from Hackley, Camban Studio, Paper Houses Design and Helen Ruth Scarves – the Indie Relief Raffle is raising money for Grampian Women’s Aid.

The initiative has the support of 50 independent businesses and designers across the region, who have provided prizes.

Helen Ruth, of Helen Ruth Scarves in Aberdeen, said: “We are blown away by the support the raffle has received.

“Initially we set a target of £1,000, but after the first day we had already met that, so we have decided to aim high and are now hoping to raise at least £10,000 for the charity.

“We want to thank everyone who has bought tickets, shared the raffle and helped get it off to an amazing start.”

For 40 years, Grampian Women’s Aid has been supporting women, children and young people experiencing domestic abuse in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.

Manager Aileen Forbes said: “We are delighted and amazed by the generosity of the donations made by the makers, businesses and supporters for this raffle.

“The funds raised will make a real difference to the women and children who are experiencing domestic abuse at this very challenging time.”
