A community radio station could soon be broadcasting live from an Aberdeenshire church.
Mearns FM provides up to date information on events, traffic and more in the north-east.
There are currently transmitters in Laurencekirk, Inverbervie and Stonehaven leading to a coverage area stretching from St Cyrus to Newtonhill.
Thanks to new funding, the station is hoping to purchase a new transmitter in Porlethen, having applied to Aberdeenshire Council for permission to do so this week.
The town’s parish church was chosen to host the station, as it was tall enough to pick up radio signals.
Gavin Harper, of Mearns Community Radio Ltd, said: “Portlethen Church Hall was Mearns FM’s preferred site due to FM signals requiring elevation to effectively cover the intended area.
“No other sites were considered as the height of the church hall is sufficient to do this.
“This extension to coverage would link four transmitters covering the entire area of South Aberdeenshire together.
“Allowing the antenna to go ahead would ensure residents of Portlethen had their own radio station to showcase their talents, link communities together, give children at local schools the option to take part in radio projects and allow more social interaction and also give other charities in the area a free platform for advertising and promotion of their services.”
If all goes as planned, individuals and groups in Portlethen will be able to volunteer and take part in their own shows.
