An Ellon violinist has been selected to take part in the National Youth Orchestra’s new project: Our Musical Planet.

Charlotte Slater, 14, lives in Auchleuchries and attends the Aberdeen City Music School at Dyce Academy.

Having played the violin for seven years, she was chosen before lockdown to take part in the prestigious project.

She will now be working with others across the UK to create a socially-distanced performance of ‘Jupiter’ from Holst’s The Planets, celebrating the power of music to connect people across any distance.

Charlotte said: “This year I was looking forward to travelling to Berlin with the Grampian Youth Orchestra, leading the Aberdeenshire Youth Orchestra and playing with the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain, as well as competing at many traditional music festivals.

“Sadly it is not to be this year but it only makes me more excited about being able to take part online with NYO GB.

“I was chosen to take part after attending an NYO inspire course in Liverpool in February, just before the lockdown.

“The course was excellent and I learned so much from the fantastic tutors.

“I am so delighted and excited to be chosen to take part in the virtual course.”

As part of the project, music lovers have been urged to come together at 5pm on May 29 and remix sounds from Jupiter, play their own instrument or sing.

Further information on the project can be found at www.nyo.org.uk.
