A north-east family is using the pages of the P&J to issue a surprise message of congratulations to a newly-engaged couple.
Eilidh Cruickshank and Nick Mackie, who live in Ellon, have agreed to tie the knot.
Originally, Mr Mackie was planning to propose while on holiday in Spain, at one of the couple’s favourite restaurants but recently decided there was “no time like the present”.
Miss Cruickshank, a key worker, was out delivering food to elderly people while her soon-to-be fiancé decorated their home with roses before popping the question.
The following day, the couple had socially distanced visits to share the happy news with family members across their hometown.
While real celebrations are not possible, Eilidh’s mum Jill hoped a surprise article in the Press and Journal would be one way to mark the occasion.
Visiting more familyMrs Cruickshank, deputy head teacher at Bridge of Don Academy, said it was “bizarre” and “emotional” to not be able to hug her daughter when the couple shared the big news from their front gate.
Instead, they celebrated by having celebratory glasses of Prosecco at opposite ends of the driveway.
Mrs Cruickshank added: “Our message to Nick and Eilidh is that the whole family is super proud of both of you, and we wish you all the best.
“Bring on the celebrations after lockdown.”
Marrying the couple will be Eilidh’s grandmother Rev Sheila Craggs, who is known across Aberdeenshrie for her work with the church and various community groups.
