A north-east charity that works to promote accessibility is marking Carers Week by reaching out to families of children with ‘hidden’ disabilities.
Aberdeen charity We Too! is inviting health and care services, schools, employers and businesses across the community to recognise the vital contribution made by parent carers.
Many families are shielding with their children due to the coronavirus pandemic and for single parents, there has been little form of respite.
With schools remaining closed as well as other conventional forms of respite, many families are under tremendous pressure and many are unable to get onto vulnerable shopping lists because it is their child classed as vulnerable and not them,
We Too! chief executive, Phionna McInnes, said: “This Carers Week our community is recognising the contribution of parents and carers in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire by producing our #WeTooCares Safe At Home Box, with a variety of sensory toys, tea and biscuits for the adults, and a journal for young carers to have as a safe space for their thoughts during this challenging time.”
Helen Walker, chief executive of Carers UK, added:“This year it is more important than ever to raise the profile of caring and recognise the enormous contribution made by unpaid carers.
“Throughout the Covid-19 outbreak they have played an essential role supporting friends and family who are older, disabled or seriously ill.
“I am delighted so many individuals and organisations are getting involved with virtual activities, helping carers to connect to others and access advice and information.”
