Stonehaven children have had their “inspirational” artwork displayed across the town.

The youngsters were challenged to design posters about the ecology and natural environment of the River Carron by building and civil engineering firm McLaughlin and Harvey.

The company is carrying out work on the Stonehaven Flood Protection Scheme, which is designed to protect homes and businesses previously been badly affected by flooding events around the River Carron.

Community liaison officer Sheila Tolmie said: “It is so important to engage the children as the future of Stonehaven is all about them.

“That is why we are trying to help them understand the importance of the flood defence works.”

“The children were encouraged to share what they thought about what we were doing, and the impact it was having.

“There was a lot of wildlife featured in the posters, fish and otters for example, and information about them.

“They’d clearly put in a lot of time and effort and we were really impressed.

“An ecologist chose the winning 25 posters and we put the top three in a sign on the boardwalk so lots of people can see them, and read the children’s research.”

The firm’s expert judge decided the very best efforts were those of pupils Lexie Murray and Isla Smith at the town’s Arduthie School.

They received a £500 prize to support a school project.

Other winning posters are dotted about the town so people can admire the work and learn more about the river’s wildlife.
