Almost £500,000 is being invested in Ellon on a variety of sustainable transport projects.
Work has already started on the first – a shared-use cycle path between the town centre and Meadows sports centre.
Future developments could include a link between Ellon and Tipperty, and a recreational route along the river Ythan to Fyvie.
Funding of £245,000, from the Sustrans charity, was matched by Aberdeenshire Council and Nestrans transport partnership, giving a total of £490,000.
Ellon and District SNP councillor, Richard Thomson, said: “Apart from the obvious health and environmental benefits from having more people walking and cycling either for leisure or fitness, as the network expands there will be great opportunities for tourism development as well.”
