Young people in the north-east who will never have voted before are being urged to register to take part in the Independence Referendum.
People aged between 16 and 18 on September 18 are eligible to take part in the vote on Scotland’s future and the Grampian Electoral Registration Officer will be writing to all 11,000 young voters in Aberdeenshire next week.
A confidential register of young voters has been introduced to keep private the details of 15-year-olds and other youngsters aged 16 and over on the day of the referendum.
Grampian Electoral Registration Officer Ian Milton said: “We want to get the message out to young people who want to have a say on the future of their country that if they are going to be under-18 on September 18, they are qualified to vote and if they do not get a letter from me next week, they need to register.
“If you are registered, you can also vote by post and we are making it easy for you to do that – simply send back the completed postal vote application form before September 3 to be able to vote in the weeks running up to the referendum.”
For more information, young people can contact the Electoral Registration Office at Woodhill House in Aberdeen on 01224 664848 or email ero@grampian-ero.gov.uk or at Mitchell Burnett House, Colleonard Road, Banff on 01261 815516 or at 234 High Street, Elgin, on 01343 541203.
