Two heroic north-east teenagers have scooped a prestigious award for their bravery.
Young Scot has announced Isla and Eilidh Noble as the winners of the Young Hero Award at the Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards 2020.
The two sisters sprung into action to save a man and a young child from drowning in the North Sea last year – using a lilo.
They spotted the adult with a boy on his shoulders in the water near Fraserburgh in August and realised they were in trouble when they started to cry for help.
Isla, 16, headed straight into the water chased by Eilidh, 15, who gave her their inflatable lilo and then waded back to shore and called the emergency services.
For the first time ever, the Young Scot Awards took place online with BBC presenter and DJ Gemma Cairney hosting the evening with celebrity presenters including Rivercity’s Leah MacRae and Stephen Purdon.
Isla said: “We are delighted to have won a Young Scot Award! To be called young heroes is an honour but we couldn’t have done it without the others who helped that day. We just did what anybody else would have done in that situation so didn’t give it a second thought.
“We are over the moon with our award.”
Louise Macdonald OBE, Chief Executive, Young Scot, said: “Scotland has so many incredible young people doing outstanding things to change lives in their communities and beyond every day.
“Congratulations to the winners, finalists and nominees who have shown dedication, passion, and excellence in their achievements. In this tough year – it is amazing to hear their uplifting stories.”
Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister added: “I want to offer my heartfelt congratulations and thanks to each and every one of the finalists. The work you’ve done is remarkable and whether your story is one of volunteering, excelling at a particular activity or campaigning on an important issue, you all deserve enormous credit.
“The contributions you have made to your communities, both locally and nationally, is both inspiring and hugely appreciated.”
Award host, Gemma Cairney added: “I was thrilled to host the first-ever online Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards. It was an unforgettable experience and I’m so inspired by the winner’s stories, achievements and the contributions they’ve been making to communities all over Scotland.”
