The opening of two new businesses in a north-east town centre has been hailed as a “sign of hope” for high street shopping.

Despite the current challenges facing the travel industry, the UK’s largest independent agent, Hays Travel, has opened a new store in Peterhead.

Local fisherman and star of BBC’s Trawlerman, Jimmy Buchan, along with councillor Dianne Beagrie, cut the ribbon to officially mark the occasion.

Branch manager Karen Erridge who has worked in the travel industry for 20 years and was previously manager of TUI in Ellon, said: “We are so excited to be open and trading in Peterhead – it is really positive news for the travel industry at the moment.”

In October last year, Hays Travel acquired the former Thomas Cook retail portfolio of 550 shops.

Joint owner and chairwoman of the firm, Irene Hays, said:  “At Hays Travel we revolve around our community and look forward to getting even more involved in the community spirit of Peterhead.”

Meanwhile on Broad Street, Very Spexy has also opened up.

The stylist boutique  is “different from other opticians” as it sources unique eye wear with brands that are “exclusive to the north-east”.

Owner Jon Mitchell said the response “has been amazing” and that he is “delighted with how well it’s been going”.

Mr Mitchell said:  “There’s not anywhere north of Edinburgh that sells my products, so it’s very unique.

“We’ve had people travel from Huntly, Alford and Stonehaven to visit the shop for eyewear consultations.”

The shop is open Tuesday to Saturdays and appointments can be made online.
