Council could ‘probably’ have done better with installation of Aberdeen beach cycle lanes, admits transport spokeswoman

Road closure on the Esplanade at the Beach Ballroom to allow worker access.

Hundreds have signed a petition calling for a rethink of a roads overhaul at Aberdeen beach.

Concerns have been raised as cycle lanes are installed along the length of the seafront, which has proven popular during the pandemic.

Yesterday traders met with council officers, as those on the promenade near Footdee claimed they were not warned work would begin this week and complained of a lack of clear information.

Owner of The Highlander Cafe Bus, Ramona Obafemi, said it was an unwelcome blow only a week after the local lockdown was lifted.

She told The P&J: “They could have been more proactive and I think the council agreed they could have managed it better.

“We were left guessing but the council has now reassured us access for deliveries and parking will be maintained on both sides of the road, but only time will tell.”

Aberdeen Council started to install bike lanes along the length of the Esplanade this week, as part of the city’s temporary £1.76 million Spaces For People project.

The council conducted a week-long consultation before the plans were drawn up.

Transport spokeswoman Sandra Macdonald said: “Officers have now met with traders and they are aware of the rolling work, which will only impact their business when workers are very near to their premises.

“Could we have done better? Probably.

“I have seen better maps (than those on the council website), and I will take that up with officers so people have better information about what’s happening.”

Council provided map of the work at Aberdeen beach.

Concern has been raised about the loss of parking at the other end of the beach at the Donmouth, and along to the Beach Ballroom, where parking will be limited to one side of the road.

Around 1,000 people had last night signed Granite City Surf Club’s petition to have the work reconsidered, claiming space for cyclists should not be added at the expense of all others.

Committee member Sarah Dickson said: “It’s just a shame the council don’t engage more with stakeholders because I’m sure they will work with everyone to overcome major issues – but it’s just the fact it’s thrown at you.”
