Fundraiser for plans to create sensory garden at popular north-east beauty spot

A fundraiser has been launched to create a sensory garden at a Haddo House and Country Park.

The Friends of Haddo group is working alongside staff at the Aberdeenshire attraction and the Ellon Rotary Club to design and create a dedicated accessible space so that people of all abilities can enjoy the grounds.

There will be a mix of plants, trees and features in the quiet, inclusive space – and it is hoped flat paths will mean wheelchair users can enjoy a variety of events at the beauty spot.

Work is afoot

A fundraiser has now been launched, with the goal of collecting £1,500, and any remaining money will go into future Haddo projects.

Suzanna Atkinson, Haddo visitor services officer, said: “We were aware that a wildlife garden in the park was a little rundown, and not accessible to wheelchair users or people with pushchairs.

“So we thought, why don’t we make this a special area that’s closer to the car park and accessible for everyone.

“Having a flat, even space will mean everyone can enjoy activities.”

Plans are also in place for a wormery, information boards and compost bins with see-through sides – so young people can use the sensory garden as a way to find out more about creepy crawlies and the country park’s ecosystem.

Rotary International are also match-funding what is raised.

To donate, people should go to justgiving.com and search “Friends Of Haddo Country Park”.
