Fashion students ready to show off designs

Gray's Fashion Show
Gray's Fashion Show

From the Berlin subway system to body armour, budding designers have taken inspiration from a variety of sources for a popular fashion show.

The annual Gray’s School of Art event in Aberdeen gives final year students the chance to display their work to the public.

The show is being supported by business improvement organisation Aberdeen Inspired, which has pledged £5,000 towards the showcase which is taking place next Saturday and Sunday.

For two nights, RGU’s new Riverside East building will become the backdrop for the event, which has become a firm favourite with the public.

Head of fashion and textiles at Gray’s, Josie Steed, said the annual show is the climax of four years of hard work for the students.

“It is always a glorious visual feast of colour and great ideas. In addition to designing the clothes, our students manage and fund the entire event from staging costs, to booking models, hair and make-up artists and refreshments.

“It is a huge task and we are delighted to have the support of Aberdeen Inspired.”

Susan Bree, chief executive of Aberdeen Inspired, said the organisation wanted to encourage creatives to remain in the Granite City on completion of their studies.

“As an organisation, we are open to doing as much as we can to assist with this. We have a real belief that embracing the arts is crucial to the long term prospects of the city.”

She added: “We have worked hard on forging links between the arts and the business sector and this support of the Gray’s School of Art Fashion Show is another integral step in allowing this to happen.”

More than 20 fashion design students have each produced collections of six outfits.

Emma Cantlay, from Ellon, was inspired to create an unusual range of clothes after a visit to Berlin.

The 21-year-old said: “I was just fascinated by the underground maps there. There is a red line running through each of my pieces which, when matched up correctly, make up one of the subway lines.”

The art school’s annual Degree Show, which showcases work from all disciplines, will open to the public from June 21 to June 28.
